Educational Partnerships
SALHA
has initiated a community educational partnership with The Fine Arts
Magnet at Thomas Jefferson High School with the objectives of meeting
both SAISD and SALHA educational goals. As a result, two projects were
created with the Jefferson Music Department. The Projects promote the
study of Texas History music and the arts, including Jefferson's
Apparal Arts program for the assembly of historical clothing of early
San Antonio and Texas. The project resulted in:
A.) The development of an authentic 1830's Mexican military
band (Banda de Guerra).
Historically accurate uniforms and musical instruments are to be
provided for the sutdents and band director in SALHA-sponsored events
and other community performance opportunites.
B.)
The development of a Fandango Tejano historical music and dance group.
Presentation of original 1830's era performances, using authentic
clothing, dances and music of old San Antonio (Bejar), are unique
displays of the diverse cultures and heritage extant during the Texas
Revolution and Republic periods.
These
partnership projects offer students opportunities to blend their
academic studies with the arts in serving the San Antonio community as
city ambassodors.
